Renewing Your Contract for Spring & Fall Terms

Depending on whether you’re continuing straight through Spring to Fall or not, and whether or not you want to change your room, different contract renewal processes are required.

Note: The deadline to renew your Winter Term room for Spring Term is March 15. Rooms will not be available for Fall 2012 renewal until early May, 2012 – if you try to renew your room for Fall 2012 before then you will receive an application error.

If you are leaving for the Spring session but will return in Fall 2012:

[1] Do NOT create a Spring 2012 Term Application.

[2] Create an Academic Year 2012-13 Term Application once it becomes available. Select your room type preferences from the application options.

If you are staying through Spring/Summer Term but not Fall 2012:

[1] Create a Spring 2012 Term Application. (a) If you want to renew your current room for Spring select “Renew your current room” at step 6. (b) If you want a different room in Spring, do NOT select “Renew your current room”; instead select your room type preferences from the options. NOTE: If you will be staying in Residence for less than the full Spring Term, please notify the Housing Office at the time of application.

[2] Do NOT create an Academic Year 2012-13 Term Application.

If you are staying through both Spring/Summer and Fall 2012:

[1] Create a Spring 2012 Term Application. (a) If you want to renew your current room in Spring select “Renew your current room” at step 6. Lions Manor smoking ban in effect Jan 1, 2012

Please be advised that effective January 1, 2012 all premises known as Lions Housing Centres will be SMOKE FREE. All students, staff, Homecare workers, family and friends of residents and any other type of visitor will not be allowed to smoke on any Lions Housing Centres property including vehicles in the parking lot.

A handful of the Senior residents will be grandfathered and one designated smoking area per location will be established for this group only. No new tenant will be permitted to smoke and eventually Lions Housing Centres will be 100% SMOKE FREE.

Violations of this policy will result in a fine to be paid to Lions Housing Centres. Multiple violations can result in removal of the tenancy agreement.

Housing StarRez Portal

Today the UWinnipeg Campus Living StarRez Portal is open to student residents! Residents can use the Portal to apply for rooms, update personal contact information, and make credit card payments against housing and meal plan fees.

Note that payments for Housing and Meal Plan Fees can no longer be made on Web Advisor. From now on residents can pay in either of two ways:

At the Housing Office (368 Spence Street) by cash, cheque, debit, or money order.
On the StarRez Housing Portal (online) by credit card (see “Apply” page).

Instructions have been emailed along with a room offer to new and returning residents. Anyone having trouble logging in should please contact an office assistant in the Housing Office at 204-786-990 or housing@uwinnipeg.ca.

Move-in Dates and Times, Fall 2011

It’s getting to the time where you’re starting to plan your move into residence – or at least it should be! Here I’ll list the specific times we’ve assigned to different room locations, so that you can plan around it.

Move-in FAQ

Why are there specific move-in dates and times? To be able to move into your room, you’ll need the keys to your room and building, as well as some additional items (depending on the building). And for us to give you these, you’ll have to fill out the paperwork – contract, personal update form, etc. If you consider that there are about 400 residents moving in and no more than 20 Housing Office Staff and Resident Assistants to keep the process moving, move-in time would be impossible without a strict schedule. Residents who will arrive in Winnipeg before their move date and time will have to make alternate lodging arrangements for the interim time.

The other reason is that there is limited parking available close to the residence buildings. If you come during a different time than the recommended time, you might have difficulty finding a parking spot nearby the building.

What if I cannot reschedule my flight? Residents arriving from national and international flights may not have the opportunity to schedule their flights in accordance with our move-in schedule. For this reason, you must provide the exact date and time of your flight so that we can prepare for your arrival. Note that this applies only to LATE move-ins — early arrivals will still have to make alternate arrangements.

Where do I go to check-in? Residents should report directly to the front door of their building to move in. Resident Assistants and Housing Office staff will be there to help you fill in your paperwork and check you into your room. Note that there is limited parking available near the building entrances, so residents may need to be dropped off with their items. Balmoral Houses residents should enter from Balmoral Street.Lions Manor has a front loop with limited visitor parking spots, as well as some street parking available on Sherbrook. McFeetors Hallresidents should use the south entrance (facing Portage), and may be able to find limited parking on Spence Street.

NOTE: Residents coming from Manitoba are encouraged to bring only essential items with them on their Move-in Day. If you are able to return home on weekends, you can retrieve additional items later on. This will greatly simplify move-in day for all residents, as there are hundreds of people moving within a very short timeframe and the lobbies and streets can get very crowded!

Mandatory Residence Orientation for New Residents. Note that the mandatory Fall Residence Orientation session is taking place on Friday, September 2.

Applicants are assigned rooms based on the rooms that are available relative to the application date: the earlier an application is received, the better chance of getting a room in residence. However, due to the large number of applications we receive, not everyone who applies UWinnipeg residence receives a room offer.

Applicants who do not receive a room offer are placed on a waiting list in the order in which they are received. In the event that other applicants decline their room offers, those on the waiting list will be contacted in this order. Unfortunately the Housing Office cannot guarantee room offers to those on the waiting list.

In the event that residence is full, we still recommend people to apply — this is the only way to get on the waiting list in the event that a suite becomes available. It is also recommended to looking for housing off-campus. We recommend students to search the online classifieds for “roommates wanted” to find someone who already has a place and is looking for a roommate; it is usually easier to find a place this way than to find a place of your own.

If you are already on the waiting list and find off-campus accommodations, please inform the Housing Office that you no longer need your place on the waiting list.

Placement offers for Fall/Winter 2011-12

For those of you who are waiting for placement offers for Fall/Winter 2011-12, the Housing Office will email placement offers the week of July 4. You will be notified of placement offers by email, so if you are unsure whether we have your correct email address, please email John-Paul in the Housing Office to update it.

UPDATE, JULY 7: All applicants have been contacted by email either with room offers or notices of being placed on the waiting list. Those who have not heard from the Housing Office should contact us to update their email address.

Changes to Payment Methods

The StarRez Housing Portal is now online for making payments and creating applications.

Starting with Fall 2011 bookings, residents will no longer be able to pay for Housing fees online via UWinnipeg’s Web Advisor system, but instead will pay by StarRez Housing Portal. Do not try to use Web Advisor to make Housing fee payments!

Also note that credit card payments will no longer be accepted in person at the Housing Office. Credit card payments will only be accepted via StarRez Portal.
